30 April 09, Singapore: The Hollandse Club Blues proved to be too strong for the Merlions on the Thursday night fixture of the SVHA 8on8 League Masters 2009 season. Playing the only Thursday night fixture on the eve of Labour Day did not prove to be a good idea for the Merlions as they were missing a number of their key players.
Missing Nirmal Singh at the back and Farleigh Clarke upfront, Merlions looked set to struggle against a polished Blues outfit. As the season gets into Matchday 3, it was plain to see that Blues are starting to build greater understanding amongst themselves and are passing the ball well.
The same can be said about Merlions, barring the fact that they had introduced a number of new players into the team and they only managed to move the ball nicely in small parts of the game.
All the same, the Merlions would feel that they have done reasonably well scoring twice against such a formidable opponent and will look forward to their next game, a crunch meeting against the Hollandse Club Oranje.
Just for theose statistics mongers, the Blues ran out 7-2 winners in the end with Pascal Blanchet scoring four times, with Jonathan Price addidng a brace and Dirk Rabelink scoring one.
Eric Tan and Balbir Singh scored for the Merlions.
Next up, Matchday 4: 4 May 09 8pm Hockey Village People v Temasek and 9pm Merlions v Hollandse Club Oranje.
